Multiple facets of identity lead to belonging to
multiple communities.
Interested in the impact of different, and at
times even contradicting,
environments of communities on one’s identity,
I began to research the crossover between the
LGBTQ+ community and the religious society
in Israel. I explored personal stories, archives,
laws, traditions, and support organizations,
discovering different approaches and beliefs.
This led me to the conclusion that belonging to a
community is unique to each individual.
Through different combinations of the graphic
languages of both communities I can present the
different ways of belonging I identified in my
research, representing different points on “the
spectrum of belonging”
Who are we?
Are we our thoughts?
Our needs?
Our desires?
Are we our choices?
We choose to belong
Are we what it makes of us?
